In 2021, along with Joe Introna, co-owner of Joe Leone's Italian Specialties and Terry Eleftheriou, co-owner of Shipwreck Grill, we started a 501 (c) (3) non-profit called Second Chance NJ. The organization was created to train and place previously incarcerated people in the hospitality industry.
High rates of recidivism (individuals returning to jail/prison after release) and the difficulty the food industry has in attracting and hiring long-term employees make this a project that can solve two serious problems in our community. High rates of recidivism occur as a result of the difficulties these people have in finding jobs, housing and health care. We have partnered with the Monmouth County Culinary Center (part of the Monmouth County Vocational School) in Asbury Park who developed the curriculum and provides the instructors. Students are provided a  tuition-free 8 week training program along with uniforms, textbooks and transportation and are placed in a job while attending school and then are placed in a full time position upon graduation. Our first class graduated in October and our second class is in session now.We have received grants from the Department of Corrections and New Jersey Re-Entry Corp, but need additional funds to finance the program going forward. One 10 person class costs about $40,000. We are planning a fund-raiser for Sunday, May 21, 2023 at the beautiful  "Beyond Organic Growers Farm": in Freehold. Outside, under tents. Time: 4-7pm. Food provided by Joe Leone's Italian Specialties, Shipwreck Grill, Brandl and more. Tickets include admission, food, drink tickets (beer & wine) and music. Entertainment by the popular Moroccan Sheepherders. "Whether they come to dance or just to listen, we make our instruments work overtime, taking classic covers and originals to another dimension, and never letting up until the crowd gets pulled into the primal, tribal vibe." |
