Kadisha Onalbayeva

Description

In a program entitled ‘Image and Sound’ we commemorate the ninth year of the Kamerman series and remember Sid Kamerman and his sculpture in harmony with Kadisha Onalbayeva, renowned international pianist, in a program of contemporary music including compositions by the artist and her husband, Michael Coleman.

Sid began taking sculpture classes from Michael Boles at the then Pensacola Junior College now Pensacola State College. What began as a hobby quickly evolved into an earnest pursuit. Sid’s sculptures were influenced by his early mathematical education as an engineering student at the University of Virginia.  Higher mathematics, material science, and structural physics were all integral to his sculpture. All this, including his welding skill using tungsten inert gas (TIG) enabled the transformation of physical construction into artistic creation.  Later in Sid’s artistic career his sculptures were fabricated from bronze, stainless, and/or copper and a natural component wood, marble, various types of stone or petrified wood.  The materials then worked in a complex dialogue.

Steinway Artist Kadisha Onalbayeva was born in Zhetisay, Kazakhstan and began her musical training at the age of five.  She attended the Zhubanov Special School for Children in Almaty, Kazakhstan.  Dr. Onalbayeva continues her performances as a recitalist, chamber musician, composer, and as an orchestral soloist.  She is the Director of Piano Studies and Professor of Music at the University of Mobile. Throughout her career, Kadisha Onalbayeva has been a strong supporter of new music. She performs her music and participates internationally in new music festivals as a composer, performer, and organizer. The performance includes compositions by Lawrence Moss, Jerry Sieg, Sofia Gubaidulina, Gulzhan Uzenbayeva, Michael Coleman, and Kadisha Onalbayeva.
