What is Kamayan?

We will be honoring the Filipino ancestral tradition of Kamayan. Kamayan "eating with your hands" is a traditional Filipino culinary communal experience with an array of Filipino food served on banana leaves. You will enjoy colors, textures, and a unique symphony of flavors.

"Kamayan" style dining is eating family-style on banana leaves on a communal table using your hands. Kamayan is a intimate meal, shared with family and friends, and strangers. No plates/utensils. The menu will have between 6-8 Filipino dishes and desserts, including classic favorites like lumpia, pancit, adobo in 3 different ways, ube halaya jam, turon, and more!

Menu + Drinks
  • The full Kamayan Menu will be e-mailed to confirmed attendees the week of the event.
  • Evzin will be creating Filipino inspired drinks at the bar for purchase on the day of.

About Lola's Kusina + Michelle Castillo

Lola's Kusina began in 2011, as an underground supper club and an arts/cultural happening that ran out of Michelle Castillo's tiny studio apartment in Oakland, CA. Since then, Lola's Kusina has done community workshops, private and public dinners, and popped up at bars, art galleries, parties, in the Los Angeles, Oakland, Coachella Valley area, Whole Foods Market, restaurants and cafes. Most recently Lola's Kusina turned into an interactive art installation in the form of a Sari-Sari store and Filipino Food stall this past March.

Her pop-up eatery is dedicated to her family, the immigrant experience, and named after her late Lola Sally, the matriarch of her family. The eatery cultivates multi-sensory communal experiences and meaningful interactions by sharing memories and stories through food + culture. In 2016, Castillo started writing a non-fiction book based on Lola's Kusina and recipes from her cultural roots. She hopes to one day open a brick and mortar space!

Castillo is not your traditional chef with a culinary school background but learned her way around the kitchen growing up in her Lola's Kusina (Grandmother's Kitchen) cooking and learning from the women in her family. Each of them was either a professional chef, baker, home cook, two of them ran a restaurant at one point, and catering business. She has experience creating Filipino, Mexican, and Plant-Based cuisine!

Michelle Castillo, is the founder of Wyld Womxn and the chef behind Lola's Kusina. She lives and works in the desert as an artist, writer, teacher, community organizer, and activist.
