Description

Honeck-Moss Productions is proud to present “In The Works.”  This exciting new series was conceived as an opportunity for composers to try out new work in front of an audience and see how it plays in a supportive environment.  It is also an opportunity to create community among the composers and their performers.

In The Works is be presented monthly and feature three composers or composer teams, each presenting about 20 minutes of new material.  This month features the works of composers: Sophie Oberfield & Joanna Burns, Spencer Robelen, and Melisa Tien & Matt Frey.  Hosted by: Thomas Honeck.

His compositions include chamber, orchestral, and choral music, as well as film scores, musical theatre works, and incidental music for plays and ballets. Whether he’s writing a bittersweet ballad or a fugue of fart sounds, Spencer covers a large spectrum of emotions with his work.

Spencer holds a B.A. in Music Theory and Composition from the University of Miami’s Frost School of Music, where he studied under the tutelage of composer Dorothy Hindman and served as president of the Society of Composers, Inc. He later received his M.F.A. in Musical Theatre Writing from New York University's Tisch School of the Arts, where he worked with numerous industry professionals, including Tony-winners William Finn and Rebecca Taichman.

Spencer's concert music has been performed by various ensembles, including PULSE Chamber Music, the Lunar Ensemble, the Frost Symphony Orchestra, and the Factory Arts Ensemble. His musical theatre works have been performed at notable venues in New York City, including Feinstein’s/54 Below and Birdland Jazz Club. As a playwright, Spencer has received several honors for his short plays and audio dramas. His one-act play, The Wheels Go Round and Round, is published by YouthPLAYS and has been performed in Canada and South Africa in addition to the U.S.
