Description

This madcap comedy centers on fading stars George and Charlotte Hay (William McDonough III and Jennifer Porter.)  Their glory days long gone, they are consigned to touring the country from one lowbrow theater to another.  The play finds them stuck in Buffalo with their small company, which includes Charlotte’s hard-of-hearing mother, Ethel (Francesca Jellison) who despises George; the stalwart and amiable Paul (Joe Spinelli); and the company ingénue, Eileen (Amanda Painter) who, after a dalliance with George, has found herself in the family way.  Into this powder keg enter the Hays’ daughter, Rosalind, (Elisabeth Hardcastle) who has recently renounced the theater life and its accompanying lunacy; her bumbling new fiancé, local TV weatherman, Howard (Randy Hunt); and The Hays’ attorney, Richard Maynard (Dana Packard) who has designs on Charlotte.  Chaos and hilarity ensue when Charlotte learns of George’s infidelity just as George receives news from their agent that the famous director Frank Capra is considering them for his new movie, and is on his way to Buffalo to see their matinee.  But can the company contain the rollicking insanity long enough for George and Charlotte to finally make it back to the top?

"[R]oles that any actor of a certain age would give his or her soul to play." - The Boston Herald

"The funniest show in New York […] The comedy has audiences rolling in the aisles. The second act has a show-within-a-show spoof of Private Lives with everybody in the wrong costumes reading the wrong lines. This has to be one of the most hysterical things ever put onstage. I have seen Moon Over Buffalo three times! I expect you to see it once." - New York Post (Liz Smith)

"Moon Over Buffalo is hilarious! Ludwig stuffs his play with comic invention, running gags and neat sense of absurdity. An evening of farcical delight. Go and enjoy!" - New York Post (Clive Barnes)

"Moon Over Buffalo is by far Broadway’s funniest, most enjoyable lighthearted play. Buy a ticket!" - Entertainment Weekly

"Stuffed with comic invention, running gags and a superb sense of absurdity, this is truly a love-letter to live theatre." - Insidebayarea.com

"Moon Over Buffalo is what a staged comedy should be. It is a wild and wacky farce. It’s Waiting for Guffmanmeets Noises Off meets your favorite Shakespeare comedy as performed by the Marx Brothers. Be prepared to leave the theater exhausted from laughter." - The News Tribune, WA
