Description

Othello is one of the Shakespeare’s most exciting, domestic and emotionally charged plays, with an exceptionally focused central plot line that contains little, if any, subplots. It is generally accepted as one of Shakespeare’s most extraordinary imaginative achievements. Othello was written when Shakespeare was at the peak of his creative powers, as he wrote Hamlet, Othello and King Lear in close succession. Debate continues to this day as to which of these plays is Shakespeare’s greatest work.
The republic of Venice employs Othello, a self-made Moor, to defend its overseas territories against the Turks.  Despite his military success, he remains an outsider to the city and an object of envy and mistrust.  As the Ottoman threat escalates and forces are dispatched to Cyprus, his junior officer, Iago-who is passed over for promotion, exploits Othello’s ambiguous position and ingenuous nature; propelling him on a course with unbridled jealousy and passion.
