Description
Mary Foster Conklin and Amy Engelhardt, two of New York City's most unique cabaret artists, are thrilled to return to the Duplex to MAKE THEIR OWN FUN. Sprung from different parts of New Jersey’s underbelly, these natural storytellers with serious potty mouths are a mutual admiration society like no other.

Conklin, winner of MAC’s Award for Best Jazz Vocalist, has a true talent for uncovering the lesser known treasures of the Great American Songbook. “Scratch her witty tough-girl-from Jersey patter,” wrote The Washington Post, “and you’ll find a sensitive artist (but not frail) with a wide-ranging boldly colored voice and an open ear for off-beat material.” Her CD, Blues For Breakfast is a tribute to composer Matt Dennis, best known for his hits, “Angel Eyes” and “Violets for your Furs.” The award-winning recording, performed on both coasts to critical acclaim, was hailed as ”delightfully dramatic” (Jazz Times) and “a work of art and heart” (powerlineblog.com). Conklin’s latest project, Life is a Bitch - a tribute to Beat poet Fran Landesman, ("Spring Can Really Hang You Up the Most" and "The Ballad of the Sad Young Men") has been praised by the New York Times as "full of salt and vinegar -- with the intensity and tough humor of someone who might have lived on the bohemian fringe in the late ’40s and ’50s, when the word ‘hip’ meant something." Conklin has performed in clubs throughout the United States and Canada, and can also be seen from time to time singing off various fire escapes as The Lady in the Red Dress with the Renegade Cabaret.

Amy Engelhardt spent 14 years in a lot of rental cars as the sole female writer/arranger and vocalist in Grammy-nominated, genre-busting vocal "band without instruments" The Bobs. Amy’s last New York appearance was in Harry Shearer and Judith Owen's Christmas Without Tears: Does This Tree Make Me Look Fat? - in which she sang her original song about the plight of the Virgin Mary NPR later dubbed, "The funniest Christmas song ever written." Her solo CD, Not Gonna Be Pretty was hailed as the "unlikely and intriguing marriage of Nellie McKay and Meat Loaf.” But Amy's first love was the theater, and her cheeky rock score for BASTARD JONES (developed with a NAMT grant, workshopped last fall and off-off-Bway in 2016) was a Top 10 Finalist for the Richard Rodgers Award, the Eugene O’Neill Theater Conference and the Alec Baldwin Fellowship (the strangest trifecta ever). Amy received MAC’s Dottie Burman Award for Songwriting in 2011 and is the creator and Artistic Producer of TUNE IN TIME, New York’s “Olympics of Musical Theatre,” running monthly at the York. She currently splits her time between Los Angeles and New York.
