Robert Sylvain and Friends

Description
Having recorded a double CD set of old Acadian folksongs from his Mémère’s notebook in 2020, thanks in part to a grant from the Maine Arts Council, Robert Sylvain is presenting the first live concert version of these arrangements, in both the original French and his English translations, with the all-star cast of traditional musicians from the studio recording together on stage for a once-in-a-lifetime event.

Featuring: Steve Muise - fiddle, Junior Stevens - accordion, Nicole Rabata - flute, David Surette - cittern, Steve Roy - bass, Neil Pearlman - piano, Eric Ambrose, Joe Parra, Will Jones - horns, Erica Brown, Meg McIntyre, Andrew Richter - strings, Betsy Hooper - hurdy gurdy, Per Hanson, Rob Duquette, Matt Shipman - percussion, Suzanna Sylvain, Johnny Sylvain, Lil’ette Sylvain, Pip Walter - backing vocals

Robert Sylvain plays the music of the Acadians, the first French settlers of Maine, along with music from the various cultures which touched and influenced their music on their epic journey from France to Acadia, to Louisiana and back again. Drawing from notebooks of Acadian ballads left to him by his Mémère Thibodeau, Sylvain folds in Breton, Quebecois and maritime elements, as well as echoes of their southern cousins the Cajuns, with Creole and zydeco influences. All these traditions are honored through the lens of a modern roots music sensibility.

Robert’s grandmother, Elisa Sylvain née Thibodeau, grew up in the St. John River Valley, in the heart of Maine’s Acadian region. As the matriarch of a family of forty grandchildren Elisa made the quilts, cooked the tourtière, and kept the songs of her heritage alive for her progeny. As the keeper of songs in his generation, Robert inherited his Mémère’s cherished notebook of old Acadian ballads, which he has painstakingly researched for their historical sources, found the original melodies, then translated and arranged the songs to present to a new generation as proof that Acadian culture still lives in Maine.
