Ceili at the Roundhouse Celtic Festival features a second option for Saturday's headline concert- the band "Calan" from Wales. This will be a more intimate experience, held at the newly restored Strand Theater (seats only 200). The Strand Theater is in downtown Evanston, easy walking distance from the Roundhouse Complex: 4-5 blocks southwest. Calan breathe fire into the old traditions with their infectious rhythms and high voltage routines before melting into some of the most beautiful and haunting songs. Calan play fiddles, whistles, guitar and bagpipes and a traditional reed instrument from Wales called a pibgorn made from a wooden pipe and the horns of a bull. Great fun, a sense of humour and step dancing from a champion dancer makes for a great show. They have introduced a new generation of music fans to Welsh traditional music – in Wales and beyond. Audiences in Belgium, Italy and France as well as all over the UK have given them a terrific reception and they are bound once again for two tours of North America in 2016. The band began by busking in the streets of Cardiff raising money to pay for university fees and now play to audiences throughout Europe and North America culminating in a performance alongside international opera singer Bryn Terfel and pop icon Sting at the Royal Albert Hall in London as part of Bryn Terfel’s 50th birthday party. ‘.....a diverse ride between giddy Welsh reeling, healthy acoustic folk-pop with upfront attitude and brashness of youth. fRoots Items Not Allowed
