Description
The creative efforts of soprano/composer Lacey Jo Benter and pianist/collaborator Brent Funderburk, this evening of song bends musical genres to their extremes to tell a love story that is overwhelmingly human. Specifically, this story is about a type of love that is intoxicating, inspiring, and absorbing at first but something that eventually becomes obsessive, overwhelming and ultimately unsustainable – limerence. A love that disrupts our lives in the moment and leaves us forever changed. Join Lacey and Brent as they cross musical genres to illustrate the power of music and just how universal this type of love story is.

The idea to explore the concept of human limerence with the music of Wagner comes from Richard Wagner’s own life. While living on the estate of one of Wagner’s most enthusiastic supporters Otto Wesendonck, Wagner developed an infatuation with Wesedonck’s wife Mathilde. It was during this infatuation which he wrote 5 songs that eventually became known as the Wesendonck Leider, named for their poetess Mathilde Wesendonck. Wagner’s collaboration with Mathilde Wesendonck is rare indeed considering not only the fact that Mrs. Wesendonck was a woman, but also the fact that Wagner rarely if ever collaborated with any librettist nearly exclusively providing his own words to his music throughout his career. There is little confirmed about the relationship itself; whether or not Wagner’s infatuation was reciprocated, whether or not the affair was ever consummated, but this moment in Wagner’s history brought about extraordinary pieces of music including the beginnings of what eventually became his opera Tristan und Isolde.

But limerence is not only relegated to the perceptually austere genre of classical music. Almost every love song we’ve ever heard could have been written by one who has suffered from limerence. This evening of exploration will take you on a journey through limerence using not only the works of Wagner and Wesendock but also pieces by such artists as David Bowie, Beyoncé, and Brandi Carlile. We will bend the genres of classical, pop, rock and others by blending and reimagining these pieces to explore this aspect of the human condition and to emphasize the idea that music, no matter the genre, is a unified expression capable of storytelling beyond one’s wildest imaginings.
