Description
Seven Years after Qadhafi’s Death: Is Libya Any Closer to Democratic Transition?

On October 20, 2011, rebels killed long-time dictator Muammar Qadhafi in his hometown of Sirte, eight months after the start of the Libyan revolt. Seven years later, what are the necessary ingredients and the prospects for a political process that could support the transition to a democratic Libya?

Panelists will discuss the current conditions and main power players inside Libya, the drivers of the continued violence and crises, and the paths to overcoming geographical divisions, rival factions and armed groups, and the governance crisis. They will also examine the agendas and roles of regional and international stakeholders interested in Libya’s oil as well as the regional power dynamics impacting the country. Further, the briefing will address the potential for the United Nations Support Mission in Libya to advance democratic governance and the role the United States can play in supporting these efforts.
