Honeck-Moss Productions is proud to present “In The Works.”  This exciting new series was conceived as an opportunity for composers to try out new work in front of an audience and see how it plays in a supportive environment.  It is also an opportunity to create community among the composers and their performers.


In The Works will be presented monthly and feature four composers or composer teams, each presenting about 15 minutes of new material.  Feature the works of composers : Lisa DeSpain,   Brandon James Gwinn, Jeff Daye & Laura Kleinbaum & Drew Fornarola,  and Jeff Thomson & Jeremy Desmon.

LISA DESPAIN is a composer and jazz pianist known for her distinctively American sound. Her current musical theatre projects include RED LIGHT, (lyrics by Kristen Anderson-Lopez, book by Julia Jordan) set in New Orleans' red light District "Storyville" and the birthplace of jazz,  A GRACIOUS PLENTY, set in the southeast tells the tale of Finch, caretaker for a small rural cemetery and a recluse who has developed the ability to see and speak with the spirits buried there, and EBBY, (book and lyrics by Sara Wordsworth and Lisa DeSpain), a loose adaptation of "A Christmas Carol" where Ebby, a middle school bully, intent on becoming the next Internet sensation, is clonked on the head by a camera during a paparazzi stampede. In her black out, she is visited by three ghosts who teach her about what really matters in life. 

Other compositions include a series of orchestra and dance works for the Buglisi/Foreman Dance Company (Joyce, New Victory, Jacob's Pillow) commissions by the Cassatt String Quartet, the New Haven Symphony Orchestra, the United States Air Force, and Copland House. She is the winner of the ASCAP Commission Honoring the Duke Ellington Centennial, A National Endowment for the Arts Jazz Fellowship, a Copland House Fellow, Dramatists Guild Fellow, a Barlow Commission, and three American Composers Continental Harmony Awards. 

DREW FORNAROLA is a songwriter and playwright from New York.  He is currently developing a stage musical for DreamWorks.   Film: VeggieTales Noah's Ark (DreamWorks, 2015) starring Wayne Brady.  Theater: STRAIGHT (2016 New York Times Critics' Pick, Acorn Theatre off-Broadway);  Claudio Quest (winner of six 2015 NYMF Awards for Excellence, optioned by Dramatic Forces); Molly Shannon’s Tilly The Trickster (Atlantic Theater Company, collaboration with Saturday Night Live's Molly Shannon); Thucydides (Winner of Samuel French Play Festival); Vote (for Me!): A Musical Debate (London Theatre Workshop, Roy Arias Theater off-Broadway);  COLLEGE The Musical (MTVu Award, Hippodrome State Theatre); and 2 musicals for children.  Awards: NYMF Award for Excellence in Lyrics, John Wallowitch Award for Songwriting, Finalist for the 2014 Kleban Award and 2009 Richard Rodgers Award, four-time MAC Award nominee.  Concerts: Lincoln Center, 54 Below, Broadway au Carre (Paris), London Theatre Workshop (London), Bar Fedora at Au Lac (Los Angeles), The Duplex, Joe's Pub.  

Other: In 2013 Drew provided string arrangements for #1 charting Japanese hip hop band CREAM, and his original score and sound design for Buddy Thomas' Devil Boys from Beyond (New World Stages, 2010) is available for licensing from Samuel French. He is the co-creator and host of the critically acclaimed Madame Mathieu's Soiree, an avant-garde variety show in the West Village.  Upcoming: Highlights from his musical TIANANMEN premiered in a concert at 54 Below starring Tony Award-winner Ruthie Ann Miles and Glee's Telly Leung.  

BRANDON JAMES GWINN is the composer of Underwear A Space Musical which premiered in the 2008 New York International Fringe Festival and was an invited production at the 2012 American College Theatre Festival. His music and lyrics for Matchmaker Matchmaker I'm Willing to Settle premiered at the American Repertory Theatre in Boston and the 2011 New York Musical Theatre Festival. Brandon is also the composer and co-lyricist of the New York Theatre Barn Commission Small Town Story which received the National Alliance of Musical Theatre Writer's Residency Grant, was a finalist for the Richard Rodgers award, was featured in the Village Theatre New Musicals Festival in Seattle, and produced in workshop at the University of Hartford. A critically lauded singer-songwriter and music director, he has arranged and played shows in LA, San Francisco, Miami, and in New York at Feinstein's, Birdland, Joe's Pub, 54 Below and on Fire Island. He has been an artist in residence at Ars Nova and is a 2015-2016 Dramatists Guild Fellow. MFA from NYU's Graduate Musical Theatre Writing Program.

JEFF DAYE is a published composer-lyricist, orchestrator, and playwright. Credits include Mad Libs LIVE! Off Broadway, for which he orchestrated and produced the score, and the 2016 workshop of Kerrigan-Lowdermilk's The Bad Years, for which he was an Associate Arranger, Associate Music Director, and Guitarist.  Jeff's play, 3oz, was an Official Selection at the Student New Works Festival of Duke University, his alma mater. Current projects in development include Cleopatra, an immersive EDM musical. 

LAURA KLEINBAUM is a bookwriter/lyricist and television writer living in New York City. She grew up in Florham Park, New Jersey, where she was once demoted from the A-team to the B-team in Softball. Luckily, she made it to Columbia University, where she wrote her first musical Crash Text Dummy.

Laura earned her MFA from the NYU Tisch Graduate Musical Theatre Writing Program, where she wrote the musicals Judy and the BeastBFF, and Playing with Matches.

Currently, Laura is a Staff Writer for the Nick Jr. animated series Butterbean's Café. Previously, she wrote script and lyrics for the Emmy award winning Nick Jr. animated series, Bubble Guppies. Recent musical theatre works include Allie in Wonderland, for Metropolitan Montessori School, A Year in Jackson, for the University of Nebraska Theatre Department,  Drop Dead GorgeousCLEOPATRA, and #MARS.

Laura is a member of the Dramatist Guild and the Lehman Engel BMI Musical Theatre Advanced Workshop, where she was a recipient of the Jean Banks Award for Best Musical.  http://www.laurakleinbaum.com/

JEREMY DESMON is an award-winning musical theatre bookwriter and lyricist whose stories have played to audiences around the world. 

 THE GIRL IN THE FRAME, produced all over the world, earned him the prestigious Kleban Prize as America’s most promising musical theatre bookwriter. Jeremy’s “revisal” of the classic musical comedy GOOD NEWS recently opened Goodspeed Opera House’s 50th Season to rave reviews. PUMP UP THE VOLUME, his rock musical adaptation of the 1990 film starring Christian Slater, is being developed with Seattle’s 5th Avenue Theatre. 

Also, in development: THE OLIVER EXPERIMENT, a ground-breaking new musical with composer Jeff Thomson, directed by Scott Schwartz; plus, Jeremy was recently selected to write the upcoming Broadway musical comedy for Simon & Schuster’s iconic "girl detective," NANCY DREW. 

Other credits include CYRANO DE BURGER SHACK (70+ high school productions in first year), SURVIVING THE AVALANCHE(Barrington Stage), VIRTUALLY ME (TheatreworksUSA tour), and I SEE LONDON, I SEE FRANCE (NYMF). 

In the world of non-musical comedy, Jeremy is also the author of the high-concept romp, 7½ WONDROUS ACT(S) OF TRUE LOVE (Midtown Direct Rep) and MUDD, a new historical-ish comedy about the Lincoln assassination. 

Additionally, Jeremy writes “family theatrical” touring arena shows for some of the world’s most recognizable characters, including monkeys (Universal’s CURIOUS GEORGE), mice (Disney Live’s MICKEY'S MUSIC FESTIVAL!), monsters (Sesame Workshop’s ELMO ROCKS!) and elephants (multiple editions of RINGLING BROS. AND BARNUM & BAILEY CIRCUS). He's also proud to have writte a show that requires skates and a Zamboni, namely Disney On Ice’s ROCKIN' EVER AFTER.  www.JeremyDesmon.com 

JEFF THOMSON is a recipient of the Jonathan Larson Performing Arts Foundation Award as well as the Dramatist Guild Musical Theatre Writing Fellowship. His songs have been performed by such artists as Adam Lambert, Lea Michele, JoJo and he was a featured songwriter in the acclaimed songbook series at Lincoln Center. 

Jeff’s original musical TRAILS was performed in New York, Los Angeles, Seattle and Tokyo, winning him the NYMF award for Best Music as well as the Stage Entertainment Development Award. Other projects include VIRTUALLY ME for TheatreworksUSA, the critically-acclaimed musical horror spoof  THANKSKILLING (adapted from the B horror movie), a club musical adaptation of the cult film JAWBREAKER, an arena rock musical adaptation of Allan Moyle's PUMP UP THE VOLUME (currently being developed at Seattle's 5th Ave. Theatre) and the postmodern musical comedy THE OLIVER EXPERIMENT (directed by Scott Schwartz). He was commissioned by Broadway Across America to compose the score to the hit Off-Broadway children’s musical MAD LIBS LIVE! and was selected by Amazon Studios to write the music for the animated movie musical, MIDNIGHT. Upcoming projects include the live action movie musical BEYOND RED conceived by film and TV writer/director, Darren Stein. 

Most recently, Jeff was selected by Simon & Schuster to pen the score to a new Broadway musical based on the iconic and beloved sleuth, Nancy Drew. www.JeffThomsonMusic.com
