Description

Richard Miller returns to Wintersville High School as the very hip, new Social Studies teacher in 1976, teaching “Problems of Democracy” to college-bound seniors.  He diverges from dry academia and approaches the topic of the justice system using role play and a unique social experiment. Students play cops, lawyers, pushers, buyers and narcs using Good & Plenty candies as drugs of choice.  Hilarity, biting political satire, mixed with satiric slapstick ensues as the process devolves into a web of betrayal, duplicity, and crumbling authority, with almost everyone ending up in “jail.”  Described as a “brilliant twist on high school madness and a compelling meditation on democracy,” that examines the foundations of integrity and the frailties of our governing system, the play illustrates the more things change, the more they stay the same.

Jeffrey Hatcher is a member and/or alumnus of The Playwrights' Center, The Dramatists Guild of America, Writers Guild of America and New Dramatists. Contains Adult Language.
