"Winners are losers who got up and gave it one more try." ~Dennis DeYoung

WHO ARE THESE GUYS?

From 1990 to 1999, GRAND ILLUSION stunned local and regional audiences with their impossibly accurate performance of STYX tunes. Playing shows from northern Quebec to the southern borders of Pennsylvania, and just about everywhere in between, GRAND ILLUSION became a mainstay of local club life in the Buffalo/Niagara area, playing to “fire-code-breaking” crowds and collecting an impressive 8 awards at the Buffalo Music Awards over a span of just three years.

By associations through friends-of-friends, a GRAND ILLUSION demo tape found its way into the hands of STYX members backstage after a concert at Darien Lake during their “Edge of the Century Tour” and they were blown away. Backstage VIP invites soon followed, and a couple of weeks and cases of red-bull later, GRAND ILLUSION was backstage partying with STYX.

An uneasy tension was felt by STYX as if they were more than flattered by the tribute. Later, STYX guitarist James Young clarified their apprehensions confiding in the boys that GRAND ILLUSION sounded so hauntingly genuine to the original versions, for a few seconds after their first listening to the demo, JY and Dennis DeYoung among others thought the tape was an unauthorized bootleg recording of their own performance. When they realized it was a tribute band, they knew they just HAD to meet these guys! Ultimately, STYX was flattered beyond words and immediate friendships were created.

Throughout the 1990s/2000s GRAND ILLUSION has been an annual favorite at popular outdoor events, performing for hundreds at the renowned RALLY IN THE ALLY outdoor rock festival series for several years and were the opening act for HONEYMOON SUITE and CHEAP TRICK.

Occasional reunions dotted Buffalo’s local club scene from 2000 to 2011 when the itch to recreate the magic and constant urging from their devoted fans prompted them to “light up” the sign, and un-roll the backdrops one more time.

During this period, with the addition of Ric Stave on bass guitar, Rick, Jon, Ric & Brian put together an equally impressive SCORPIONS tribute band called BLACKOUT.

Brian later pursued life as an accomplished blues guitarist while Jon and Ric currently perform together in the gifted local cover band PASSIONWORKS, as well as several other bands.

(More information on this can be found in Ric and Jon's bios.)

THEY’RE B-A-A-A-CK!

After a much-needed hiatus, GRAND ILLUSION is back and is bringing you all your favorite STYX classics with the noticeably aggressive power you came to expect from Buffalo’s best tribute band. With Ric Stave on bass guitar, Taurus bass pedals, keys & vocals, Jon White on drums & percussion and Brian Scranton on electric and acoustic guitars & vocals working tirelessly on other projects, they still had room on their plates to answer the call when lead singer/keyboard player Rick Allen posed the question, “Wanna do it again?”

Fortunately for Rick and fans of STYX music everywhere, the unanimous reply was a resounding “YES !!”
