Description

The final concert of the 39th subscription season, begins with what is arguably Brahms’ most famous dance, his Hungarian Dance No. 5.   This will be followed by Robert Schumann’s final symphony, his fourth, which is through-composed in one movement.  The younger Brahms looked up to the elder Schumann.  They knew one another well and Brahms continued his relationship with Robert Schumann’s famous musician wife, Clara, after Robert’s death in 1856.  These composers, along with Wagner, truly define romanticism in music in Germany!

The second half of the concert begins with music director Sheldon Bair’s Flourish for Orchestra, which is based on the lovely Navy Hymn and is dedicated to the memory of Bair’s father, a Navy seaman in the Pacific Theater during World War II. This piece is a labor of love and gratitude to his father and the SSO and 39 years as music director.

The SSO will then lighten the mood with the wonderful Cuban Overture by George Gershwin as the US begins a new relationship with Cuba.

Completing the season will be one of Tchaikovsky’s great, no-holds-barred, sonic masterpiece Marche Slave or Slavonic March which is musically similar to the same composer’s 1812 Overture but without the cannons yet goes out with a "bang" non-the-less!
