“SOME ENCHANTED EVENING” AT THE KALEIDOSCOPE

With a unique approach to one of Broadway’s most cherished musicals, Bayou City Theatrics delivers yet another theatrical work that has stood the test of time: South Pacific. The BCT 2015 Spring Season continues with the treasured work by Rodgers & Hammerstein (book contributions from Joshua Logan.) South Pacific is based on the Pulitzer Prize-winning novel, Tales of the South Pacific. The production runs March 13 through March 29 at The Kaleidoscope.

The original production hit the Broadway stage in 1949, and revolutionized the current trend of its defined predecessors. Honoring its innovation and following in the groundbreaking style in which it was originally presented, the Bayou City Theatrics creative team takes an unsuspected, yet universal, turn in their translation of this celebrated musical. The BCT production will focus on poignant themes that remain significant, even in today’s culture.
Centered on Nellie Forbush (Erica Bundy), an American nurse stationed on a precarious island in the midst of the Second World War, South Pacific raises questions about cultural perspective, upbringing, and romance.  She has become enchanted with French planter Emile de Becque (Tyler Galindo), and is ravaged with inner turmoil as she fights against true love in an attempt to keep her roots intact and her feet on the ground. Young Lieutenant Joe Cable (Colton Berry), newly reporting for duty, is persuaded to journey to the mysterious island of Bali Ha’i by Bloody Mary (Aggie Balka), and compassionate sailor, Luther Billis (Jayson Kolbicz). As the war rages on and tensions rise, the complications they face billow and break like the waves against the shore of the tiny island.

Alongside a polished cast of local professionals portraying nurses, sailors, commanders and island natives, these leading characters bring the show to life with a magnetizing performance. The nostalgic score will pull on the heartstrings (“Some Enchanted Evening”, “This Nearly Was Mine”, “Younger Than Springtime”) as Bayou City Theatrics takes the audience on an impassioned voyage to the islands.

South Pacific is directed and designed by Colton Berry with music direction by Jane Volke. The production runs Friday and Saturday evenings at 8:00 p.m. and Sundays at 5:00 p.m., March 13 through March 29, at Bayou City Theatrics’ downtown theatre, The Kaleidoscope (705 Main Street, Suite B, at Capitol). Tickets ($35-$40) are available at www.BayouCityTheatrics.com as well as at the door, although BCT encourages purchasing tickets in advance to secure seating in their intimate venue. Convenient cash parking is located less than one block away at the corner of Capitol & Fannin, in the SAKS’ garage.
