Description
Mr. New will sing and play a handful of selections at the piano, with a surprise guest or two, all the while sharing the moments of his life -- both hilarious and heartbreaking -- that inspired these songs into being.

A composer, lyricist, playwright, and performer, Joel B. New moved from the Midwest to New York in 2004 to pursue a career in musical theatre writing. He is the proud recipient of a 2008 American Theatre Wing Jonathan Larson Grant for his music and lyrics.  Joel has been praised as one of today’s “most exciting contemporary musical theatre writers” whose songs are "abound with charm and a warm delicacy" (BroadwayWorld.com). His stage projects include TO HELL AND BACK, MACKENZIE & THE MISSING BOY, AWAKENING (book: Jenny Stafford, music: J. Oconer Navarro), STANDALONE, THE NOBODY DIARIES, SHIVER, and RSVP.  Joel’s work has been seen and developed in New York at Ars Nova, Lincoln Center, 54 Below, New York Theatre Barn, and more.  In addition to the Larson Award, his honors include being a two-time O’Neill Music Theatre Conference finalist, receiving an NYU-Tisch Alumni Grant (made possible by the Frederick Loewe Foundation), a Margo Lion Award for Outstanding Adaptation, and a Blevins-Thrower Encouragement Award. Joel’s musical theatre podcast “Something New” was recently named one of the Top 20 Podcasts for Theatre Fans by BroadwayWorld.com. "Something New" is a platform for Joel to interview the savviest singers he knows: each guest rings multiple talents to the theatre industry -- from photography to coaching dialects to massage therapy -- and their careers as performers have only been enriched by them. This biweekly podcast dissects what it means to be a working, multifaceted artist in America and always concludes with a premiere recording from one of New's latest musical projects. Joel holds an MFA in Musical Theatre Writing from NYU’s Tisch School of the Arts, and is a member of BMI and the Dramatists Guild of America.  He is currently represented by Abrams Artists Agency. joelbnew.com
