Description

Honeck-Moss Productions is proud to present “In The Works.”  This exciting new series was conceived as an opportunity for composers to try out new work in front of an audience and see how it plays in a supportive environment.  It is also an opportunity to create community among the composers and their performers.

In The Works is be presented monthly and feature three composers or composer teams, each presenting about 20 minutes of new material.  This month features the works of composers: Jinhee Kim & Sean McCabe, Selda Sahin & Derek Gregor and Alex Wakim. Hosted by: Thomas Honeck.

JINHEE KIM is a composer, orchestrator and teaching artist from Seoul, South Korea. Her music has been performed in many places around the world, including at the Lincoln Center this past winter. At home in South Korea, she has received several awards for her concert music, including the Seoul Composition Music Festival. Her musical “Saint Sebastian” (book and lyrics by Sean McCabe) will have a workshop production at New York University in the summer. Her other musicals, “Strawman,” “Marcelino” and “Hello, Scrooge” (which has run seasonally in South Korea since 2016) have had productions in Australia and South Korea. Jinhee holds a Master of Fine Arts degree from the Graduate Musical Theatre Writing Program at NYU Tisch, a Master of Music in Music Theory and Composition from NYU Steinhardt and a Bachelor of Music in Music Composition from Hanyang University in Seoul.

SEAN McCABE
is a Canadian lyricist/librettist/composer whose work examines themes of family, faith and identity, primarily through musical comedy. Sean earned his Master of Fine Arts degree from NYU in the Graduate Musical Theatre Writing Program in 2018, where he wrote the book and lyrics for “Saint Sebastian” (music by Jinhee Kim), which is being produced by the Collaborative Development and Production & Tisch New Musical Theatre Workshop in June 2019. Most recently, Sean and Jinhee were featured in the Broadway’s Future Songbook Series at the Lincoln Center’s Bruno Walter Auditorium and were commissioned to write a children’s musical for the Han Music Company and Academy in Seoul, Korea.

SELDA SAHIN & DEREK GREGOR are the songwriters of the short musical film Grind starring Anthony Rapp (Dazed and Confused, Rent) and Claire Coffee (NBC's Grimm). Grind screened at 29 festivals around the world (best film at NYC Downtown Short Film Festival, SENE Music and Film Festival, Honolulu Rainbow Film Festival, FilmOut San Diego and others) . Selda and Derek co-wrote Eric Michael Krop's (Broadway: Godspell) debut pop album "Greater Things" (also available on iTunes) and are currently co-writing Lilli Cooper’s (Broadway: Spring Awakening, Wicked) debut EP. They've been recognized as "Ones to Watch" by the Nashville Songwriters Association (NSAI) and their song "The Storm" was a finalist in the Great American Song Contest. Derek is a recipient of a Richard Rogers Award, a MAC award and a John Wallowitch award. Selda was selected for the ASCAP Songwriters Collective and the ASCAP Country Music Workshop in Nashville, and was a member of the Advanced Class at the BMI Workshop. ALEX WAKIM is an internationally awarded and performed first generation Lebanese-American composer living in New York City. He received a Bachelors of Music from Kansas State University, and is continuing his musical education at New York University, pursuing a Masters in Film Scoring. His aesthetics gravitate towards mixing traditional and modern sounds, and exploring how these sounds can signify new meaning. These tastes have led to intriguing collaborations, the most notable being An American in Beirut, an original musical based on Wakim’s own experiences as a Lebanese-American, originally developed with Jonah Kirkhart. This heritage has also inspired the concert pieces Mountains of Lebanon; Syria, A Prayer for Peace; The Soft Mist; and The Madman.

His composition Childhood Recollections was commissioned by the Alba Music Festival in Italy, and he has won the Kansas Soundscapes competition, a blind submission composition contest open to all Kansans, three years in a row for Cascading Beams (2018), Hot Blue (2017), and Clarinet 4 (2016). His true passion lies in composing for media as he has developed music for documentaries, video games, and short films: most notably, Refuge in the Heartland, a documentary exploring refugee children who are resettled in Kansas.

Having written for jazz big band, chamber ensembles, narrators and clarinets, orchestras, and voices of all kinds, Wakim’s diversity also allows him to explore the vast array of musical sensibilities found in film music. Most recent projects have included scoring My Grandmother’s Grape Leaves, a documentary exploring Armenian culture seen through the food; Return to Fall, a story about the heavy metal sub-culture in Syria before the war, and a metal band that had to flee Syria due to the war; and a self-produced workshop and performance of An American in Beirut, taking place this summer. Wakim also loves coffee and cats, and thinks that rain and other forms of water are quite lovely.
