Montford Park Players

Description
Montford Park Players, an Asheville theatrical tradition, is proud to announce their upcoming production of William Shakespeare’s Hamlet. All performances will be held at the Hazel Robinson Amphitheatre at 92 Gay Street in the heart of Asheville’s historic Montford District, from September 7th through the 29th on Friday, Saturday and Sunday evenings at 7:30pm. This performance like ALL of Montford Park Players’ shows will be absolutely FREE to attend.

This classic tale of “the melancholy Dane” is one of the best-known plays in all of literature and is considered by many to be the greatest play ever written! The show has been presented by Montford Park Players many times over their 46-year history, most recently in 2013, and it remains one of the most-widely produced plays, at theaters around the world. The current production promises to be a daring one, as director Melon Wedick will give us an adaptation that keeps the action moving over two hours, but also incorporates selections from Virgil's Aeneid.

“I've done a lot to modify the script of Hamlet, and not everything I've done will appeal to everyone,” says Wedick. “But I hope that everyone who sees it, no matter how familiar they are with the base material, will come away with a new perspective on the play.”

In the play, when the King of Denmark, recently murdered by his brother, demands that his bookish son avenge his death, prince Hamlet must determine the truth, evade a host of meddlers, and overcome his own hesitations to send his murderous uncle to bloody death.

Director Wedick says of the plot, “To me, Hamlet is the most human and relatable of any of Shakespeare's characters. He's a very modern man, very self-aware, put in an impossible and weird situation, and his actions (and inactions) speak so loudly of what it means to be human, trying to do right with imperfect knowledge, always managing to be just that little, crucial bit wrong."

The show stars Jon Stockdale in the titular role, with Montford Park Players’ favorites Travis Lowe, Julianne Arnell, Ryan Martin and Jane Hallstrom all performing starring roles. The cast also includes Sonia D’Andrea, Will Storrs, Bill Parks, Molly Graves, Charlie Wilson, John Mendenhall, Savannah Stone, and Jamie Knox as Ophelia. Costumes are by Amanda Raye Shive and sets are designed by Laura Lowe.

Aiming toward clarity, Wedick says that she hopes “that every person who walks away from this play will hear something they've never heard before.”

With her stellar cast and crew, we have no doubt about it.

Montford Park Players, has been presenting Shakespeare and other classical works to the Asheville community since 1973, and has since grown to be one of Western North Carolina’s most beloved and well-known cultural attractions.
