“The Wind Walk” features Taiwanese composer Hung Ping Chang’s Eastern influenced music: “The Wind Walk” and “The Bird” with a revised edition with Jazz flavor. Joined by Taiwanese pianist, Yi- Hsuan(Sobina) Chi, Taiwanese violinist, Yu-Wei(YoYo) Hsiao and music director, Hung-Ping(Apple) Chang. The concert will also present Sobina’s new works, Schoenfield’s Four Souvenirs for Violin and Piano, Piazzolla Oblivion for Violin and Piano, and other classical works. 

Composer Hung Ping Chang’s works are known for their fusing of the East and the West. New York-based Jazz pianist, Sobina and the classical violinist YoYo will present unique interpretation of each piece informed by their brilliant technique. These three musicians share a classical music background which informs their technique and improvisational sense. Hung Ping Chang is a composer from Taipei, Taiwan. Her music harmonizes unique cultural elements from Eastern and Western cultures. She not only creates the new artistic formats through music but also explores making music with diverse organic elements featuring traditional aesthetics of Eastern Chinese and Taiwanese culture. In addition to her contributions to the concert music, Hung Ping’s composition works are in collaboration with dance, film, visual arts, motion picture, and fashion. She was commissioned by New Asia Chamber Music Society(NACMS) and her piece Spring, for Erhu and Strings was premiered at Merkin Concert Hall in Lincoln Center on April 15th, 2017. Last June(2016), Hung Ping was commissioned by the Taipei Economic Cultural Office (TECO) in New York to write and conduct the opening song Thank you MTA, thank you from Taiwan at the concert "Embarking on the Journey" that TECO showed appreciation to MTA. Recently, her work Mulan Fantasie for the symphonic band was selected for the final stage of  World Association for Symphonic Bands and Ensembles'(WASBE) 1st International Composition Competition which will take place from July 19-21, 2017 in Utrecht during the WASBE International Conference. hungpingchang.com

Violinist Yu-Wei(YoYo) Hsiao was born and raised in Taiwan. Mr. Hsiao received his Bachelor of Music degree in Violin Performance from the Chinese Culture University in Taiwan (2011) and Master of Music degree from the Mannes College of Music in New York City (2015).  Mr. Hsiao was a student of Ms. Hiroko Yajima at Mannes. He was honorably chosen and served as a Violin Principal at the Mannes Orchestra. While at Mannes. Mr.Hsiao had played in the Ministry of National Defense Symphony Orchestra (2011-2012) and had been selected to play in the Taiwan National Choir Orchestra (2012). In 2015, Mr. Hsiao participated in the Bowdoin International Music Festival with the scholarship offer.  Mr. Hsiao is currently pursuing his Doctor of Musical Arts degree in Violin Performance at Rutgers University, with Todd Phillips. The violin he currently plays was made in 1892 Genoa, Italy, which is sponsored by the Chi-Mei Foundation.

Yi-Hsuan (Sobina) Chi, pianist, composer, piano instructor and accompanist. A jazz pianist based in New York City, Sobina was born in Taipei Taiwan in a musical family. She began studying piano as young child, and since then has made many musical strides. Before leaving for the United States, she was active in the thriving Taiwanese jazz scene and featured at the Taichung Jazz Festival 4 years in a row.Her love of jazz drove her to make the leap to study abroad and continue her studies in New York under the tutelage of Grammy award pianist Arturo O'Farrill. She received a Bachelors of Arts degree from City University of New York (CUNY), Brooklyn College Conservatory, and currently is working as an assistant to Mr. O'Farrill at Brooklyn College Conservatory, performing and teaching throughout the east coast. She is now completing her master's degree in jazz performance at CUNY Brooklyn College where she studies with Mr. O'farrill. She hopes to continue to make an impact on the New York musical community and abroad.
