Description
Xasthur is a band that thrives on taking risks. From its early days of bleak and disturbing black metal up until the confrontational and dark acoustic folk blues music of today, it has always been a musical project that has been keeping people guessing.
Xasthur started in 1996 through Scott Conner’s desire to express the negativity in life to listeners. Over the span of a decade, he released 8 albums and dozens of other releases through labels like Hydra Head Records. After putting the band to rest in 2010, Scott decided to change his musical style from black metal to acoustic folk and blues music and went on to start Nocturnal Poisoning. After a few years, Scott revived the Xasthur name in May of 2015 and now has a full band that comprises of vocalist and second guitarist Christopher Hernandez and bassist Rachel. This new reinvention of the band plays in the same vein of the style that was established with Nocturnal Poisoning.
Xasthur’s music today can be described as a fingerpicked barrage of notes with varying moods and tempos. From the faster songs that paint pictures of urban desperation to the slower songs that mold into moments of solitude and depression, Xasthur is a band that keeps audiences locked into a dreary state of mind that will not let go until long after the music has stopped playing. With songs that confront drug abusers, homelessness, and the misery of city life, Xasthur’s music reminds us that the real nightmares are the ones we experience in everyday life.
