Description
This powerful drama examines the cultural clash between the high-energy business world of
industrialization and the waning genteel sensibilities of the post-Civil War agricultural South. Greed and self-interest clash with virtue, social responsibility, and justice. The play is set in a small town in Alabama in 1900 where the Hubbard family wants to invest in a mill that will “bring the machine to the cotton, and not the cotton to the machine.” The family struggles over what is right, with Regina eagerly promoting the investment and her husband, Horace, resisting bringing the mill to the town just as strongly. What seems like a clash between cultures is worked out in the dramatic struggles of a family torn apart by money, honor, and power.
