BAYOU CITY THEATRICS RETURNS THE

‘RAZZLE-DAZZLE’ TO CHICAGO

CHICAGO is given a new life this October, after Bob Fosse’s successful original Broadway production, Oscar-Award-winning film incarnation (Best Picture, among others), hundreds of international productions, a multiple-Tony-Award-winning Broadway Revival (currently, the longest running revival in Broadway history). Right here in Houston, Bayou City Theatrics offers a brand new production, aiming to ‘return the piece to its Vaudevillian roots.” Artistic Director, Colton Berry, and Resident Choreographer, Luke Hamilton, have set out to create a dazzling production while maintaining the gritty soul of its predecessors.

Based on the 1926 play by Maurine Dallas Watkins, this gin-soaked, satirical musical follows starry eyed housewife, Roxie Hart (Derrien Kellum), who has shot and killed her lover in a drunken dispute during the Prohibition era. According to the matron at the Cook County Jail, Matron “Mama” Morton (Heather Hall), “murder is a form of entertainment.” With the help of her devoted husband, Amos (Brian Chambers), Roxie obtains the greasiest, yet most successful lawyer in town, Billy Flynn (Kyle Ezer). Billy explains that she can use the media’s interest in her murder trial to gain stardom. Fighting tooth-and-nail for the spotlight with double-homicide-convicted Vaudeville star, Velma Kelly (Danica Dawn Johnston), Roxie’s lust for stardom reveals a whole new side of Chicago’s justice system and the manipulative power of the press.

Gone are the fishnet bodysuits and thongs. Gone are the nondescript bandstand and café chairs. Gone are the many coats of Broadway varnish. And in their place? BCT’s production of CHICAGO promises to be a raw, in-your-face look at the infamous musical that America has grown to love, with the infusion of the raucous Vaudeville atmosphere from which it was created. Featuring an incredible live band, conducted by Music Supervisor, Jane Volke, invigorating choreography by Luke Hamilton and inspired direction and design by Colton Berry, CHICAGO will delight audiences with its nostalgia and surprise them with innovation. Though BCT’s approach will be unlike any other, CHICAGO still maintains its hilarious, yet thought-provoking book by Bob Fosse and Fred Ebb and its infectious score by John Kander with lyrics by Ebb.

CHICAGO runs October 9 through 19, with Thursday, Friday and Saturday performances at 8:00 p.m. and Sunday matinees at 5:00 p.m. Tickets are available online at www.BayouCityTheatrics.com or at the door, though it is suggested to purchase in advance to guarantee seating at BCT’s new, intimate venue.
