Description
Backstage is proud to announce auditions for their April production of George Orwell's 1984 directed by Osman Aboubakr.

Synopsis
War is peace
Freedom is slavery
Ignorance is strength

1984 powerfully depicts the horrors of human fate in a society where Big Brother is always watching - where everything that is not prohibited is compulsory. As you watch this play, consider ... We now have the means to this end.

This is George Orwell's masterpiece adapted for the stage.

Directed by Osman Aboubakr.

Auditions at The Junction in Alserkal Avenue:
December 18, 2015: 10 am to 1 pm
December 19, 2015: 10 am to 1 pm

Please prepare a 2 minute monologue of your choice AND the following excerpt from Network (1976) in the character you are auditioning for:

"Last night, I was awakened from a fitful sleep, shortly after 2 o'clock in the morning by a shrill, sibilant, faceless voice. I couldn't make it out at first in the dark bedroom. And I said, 'I'm sorry, you will have to talk a little louder.'...And the Voice said to me: 'I want you to tell the people the truth, not an easy thing to do because the people don't want to know the truth.' And I said, 'You're kidding. What the hell should I know about the truth?' But the Voice said to me: 'Don't worry about the truth. I will put the words in your mouth.' And I said, 'What is this, the burning bush? For God's sake, I'm not Moses.' And the Voice said to me: 'And I'm not God. What has that got to do with it?'

"And the Voice said to me: 'We're not talking about eternal truth or absolute truth or ultimate truth. We're talking about impermanent, transient, human truth. I don't expect you people to be capable of truth, but god-dammit, at least you're capable of self-preservation!' And I said, 'Why me?' And the Voice said: 'Because you're on television, dummy! You have 40 million Americans listening to you and after the show you could have 50 million. For Pete's sake, I'm not asking you to walk the land in sackcloth and ashes preaching the Armageddon. You're on TV, man.' So I thought about it for a moment, and then I said, 'Ok.'"

Characters:
SYME - a pale, timid, scholarly person, hesitant and self-effacing in manner, preferably wearing large horn-rimmed glasses as a sort of mask. Played by either a man or a woman. Wears the faded blue coveralls of the Party.

PARSONS - A jovial, stupid, unpleasant-looking woman approaching middle age. Wears the faded blue coveralls of the Party, but with a red sash across her ample bosom, sash reads: "Anti-Sex League."

WINSTON - An intelligent young man who disagrees with much of what he encounters but is too careful to express these feelings. Wears the faded blue coveralls of the Party, but manages to look just a bit neater than the others.

MESSENGER and COFFEE VENDOR - Both are teenage girls. Both wear the blue coveralls of the Party. Can be one actress playing both roles.

GUARD (x2) - The Guards wear black uniforms, and have heavy revolvers at their waists. Ominous. Can be male or female. The guard named Martin has a speaking role.

O'BRIEN - Wears the black coveralls of the Inner Party. He is course, humorous, brutal. In spite of his formidable appearance, he does have a certain charm of manner.

JULIA - Small, beautiful, young woman. Hair pulled back into a knot at the nape of her neck. Wears the faded blue coveralls of the Party, with the red "Anti-Sex League" sash. Manner is prim and rather diffident at first; but that changes.

GLADYS - 14 year old girl or boy, member of the children's Spies organization. Dressed in blue coveralls.

LANDLADY - an unkempt old woman, dressed in an old, sleazy house dress. She is one of the "proles."

WAITRESS (or WAITER) - Rather slovenly character. Wears blue coveralls.
